Sandy teaches in a middle school in Minnesota. She finds engaging short stories and uses them as prompts for discussions. She has an inner ring and an outer ring at discussion time: the inner ring students are discussing the text, the outer ring students have tablets and are critiquing the discussion using Today’s Meet. “Outer ring” comments include reactions to the ideas heard, observations about use of evidence, and statements about the speaking skills of the inner ring. Students are encouraged to help each other become better speakers during discussions.
